Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Made with fruit from certified heritage vines, the A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines 2023 Swartland Grensloos Chenin Blanc strikes a beautiful balance between intensity and elegance. There is nothing excessive on the bouquet, where elements of stone fruit, saffron and crushed stone converge smoothly to add to the wine's nuanced appeal. The Grensloos provides a beautiful window onto the purity of the grape. The wine is finely textured with medium-bodied appeal and laced with mineral definition throughout. This is a release of 8,000 bottles.

Features

Description

Adi Badenhorst came to Swartland not for comfort, but for truth. After training in Elsenberg and working in prestigious wineries, he decided to opt for dry farming, low yields and minimal intervention: dust in the barrels, constant wind and old vines that stand up for themselves. "Grensloos" (without limits) is not a pose, it is an idea: a Chenin Blanc born of Paardeberg's character, with hillocks of decomposed granite, quartz and earthy iron flecks that push the wine towards mineral tension rather than easy fruit. The anecdote that best defines it is the way it "risks" blending from the beginning: instead of vinifying separate plots and then adjusting, here the blend is dictated by the landscape from the pressing, like a portrait without retouching. Varietal: 100% Chenin Blanc, pure and undistracted.

Winemaking

At Badenhorst Grensloos Chenin Blanc, the grapes are harvested relatively early, parcel by parcel, to preserve nerve and precision. The bunches are cooled overnight and pressed whole, joining different vineyards from the entry. Fermentation is spontaneous, without selected yeasts, seeking depth and authenticity. The wine ferments and matures in a combination of old French oak vats (approx. 1.200 L) and concrete tanks, so that the wood does not aromatize, but only supports. It spends about 10 months on primary lees, gaining volume and texture. It is bottled after about 12 months of ageing, without fining or filtering, in order to preserve its energy and mineral footprint.

Taste

In Badenhorst Grensloos Chenin Blanc, at first it is a serious, even somewhat reserved wine: it needs air to unfold. Then quince, white peach and ripe citrus appear, with a hint of fine honey and discreet white flowers, always supported by a sensation of wet stone and dry salinity. Straight on the palate, with firm acidity that sharpens the passage and stretches the wine like a taut cable. The texture is creamy but not soft; it is rather grainy, leesy, with a mineral core that commands. The finish is long, dry and vibrant, with notes of lemon, faint spice and warm rock: a Chenin without make-up, gastronomic, calling for grilled fish, seafood or spicy dishes where its tension shines through.
