Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The A. A. Badenhorst Family Wines 2024 Swartland Secateurs is an informal blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsault in a screw-cap bottle. This charming red shows easy fruit-forward appeal that puts it somewhere between a Barbera d'Alba and Beaujolais. It shows a dark color and good consistency with aromas of blackcurrant, plum and crushed aspirin. To the palate, it reveals a soft, medium-bodied texture.

Description
In Swartland, where the sun beats down unbidden and the wind combs the granite hills, cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst took over an old farm with an idea as simple as it is courageous: to make wines that taste of the land, not of a recipe. Their philosophy is agricultural rather than oenological: dry-farmed viticulture, bush vines and naturally low yields, trusting that the harshness of the landscape - and not technology - writes the character.
Badenhorst Secateurs Red Blend is their "everyday" red only in intention: accessible, yes, but born from serious vines on Paardeberg Mountain, slopes on granitic soils that drain and force the vines to go deep. The blend is a Mediterranean nod to South Africa: Shiraz (50%), Grenache (25%) and Cinsault (25%). Three distinct voices that sing here from the first chord, because the key decision is not to "assemble" it at the end, but to co-ferment it to achieve seamless integration.
Elaboration
In Badenhorst Secateurs Red Blend, the grapes are harvested by hand, cooled overnight and crushed to enter open concrete vats. Fermentation is natural (indigenous yeasts) and lasts about two weeks, during which time the wine is pummelled twice a day, foot trodden, seeking delicate extraction and texture. After devatting, the wine is transferred to old barrels, foudres and concrete tanks: low-impact containers that preserve the purity of fruit and freshness. Ageing lasts 7 months on thick lees. Before bottling, the wine is lightly filtered, without fining.
Taste
Badenhorst Secateurs Red Blend in the glass is bright, bright red, easy to drink but with a serious look. The nose combines red fruit (cherry, raspberry) with a touch of plum, pepper and a fine smoky hint, very South African Syrah. Juicy on the palate, with a refreshing and lengthening acidity; the tannins are fine, more leathery than oaky. The finish is dry, spicy and clean, leaving a sensation of a fruity and mineral red wine that begs to be served on the table: grilled meats, lamb, cured meats or Mediterranean cuisine.
