Description

Xérico is a red wine from D.O. Rioja, produced by Tentenublo Wines, a project led by Roberto Oliván, a young winemaker who has revolutionised the region's wine scene. The winery, located between the towns of Lanciego and Viñaspre in the Rioja Alavesa, works under a philosophy of organic viticulture and minimal intervention, which means that the natural processes of the vine are respected to the maximum. This wine is a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Viura, an unusual combination that brings freshness and complexity to the final result.
The vineyards from which these grapes come are goblet-trained, with ages ranging from 15 to 50 years. They are located in three different plots: El Pedrón, La Entrada, and Majadonda, all of them located on limestone marl soils, which gives the wine a mineral character. The climatic conditions in this area are extreme, with exposure to cold winds and rainfall influenced by the nearby Sierra de Cantabria. Harvesting is done by hand, and the grapes are picked in small boxes to avoid damage during transport to the winery.

Winemaking

The fermentation is spontaneous and takes place in concrete tanks of different sizes, allowing a controlled and gentle fermentation, without excessive intervention. The wine is aged for 12 months in these same concrete tanks, without passing through wooden barrels, which helps to preserve its natural freshness and the expression of the fruit. In addition, after bottling in November, the wine has rested in the bottle for two years before being released onto the market, allowing its aromas and flavours to take hold and integrate optimally.

Taste

Xérico stands out for its balance between freshness and ripeness. On the nose, aromas of fresh red fruits, such as strawberries and blackberries, mingle with subtle spicy notes and hints of smoke. The palate is juicy and vibrant, with refreshing acidity and chalky tannins that give it a silky yet structured texture. Flavours of liquorice, bay leaf and black olives add a layer of complexity, while its mineral character makes it a unique experience. Despite its alcohol content of 14.5%, the wine is well-balanced without being heavy, and its long, balsamic finish makes it ideal with game dishes, cured cheeses or cured meats.
