Description
Olivier Leflaive Meursault is the most honest way of understanding Meursault: a white wine that does not pretend to shout, but to whisper limestone. In this corner of the Côte de Beaune (Burgundy), where the chalky clay soils support vines some four decades old and the fresh hillside air keeps the pulse, tradition weighs heavily... but here it is transformed into precision. The winery makes a decision as brave as it is rare: instead of obsessing over a single iconic vineyard, it builds the wine as a mosaic of climats (10-15 parcels) to capture the complexity of the village. The variety is 100% Chardonnay, born to translate stone, light and patience.
Winemaking
At Olivier Leflaive Meursault, the grapes come in whole(100% whole bunch) and are worked calmly: 24 hours of static racking to gain clarity before fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, and the total ageing is stretched out over 18 months, first refining in French oak and finishing with 6 months in stainless steel to regain tension and definition. The use of wood is millimetric: 20% new barrels, the rest used, to sculpt texture without masking the origin. Result: a white wine of classic structure, polished, with depth and backbone.
Taste
On the nose, Olivier Leflaive Meursault opens with almond, hazelnut and restrained white fruit: apple and a hint of fine vanilla, more suggested than evident. The palate is broad, creamy, but never heavy: a fresh line of acidity cuts through the texture like a stone blade, bringing energy. An elegant spice (hint of ginger) is hinted at and the hallmark of the house appears: persistent, saline minerality that cleanses the palate. The finish is long, melting, with that Burgundian blend of noble butter and chalky edge. A Burgundy Chardonnay for the table: seafood, buttered fish, poultry in sauce, and long silences between glasses.
