Description

Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat is one of those young Burgundians who inherited a weighty surname… and decided not to rely on it. At just 20 years old, in 2010, he took the reins of the family estate in Vosne Romanée and, rather than seeking immediate power, chose the riskier path: making Pinot Noir for precision, for transparency, for texture. His vision for Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Chambolle Musigny stems from a simple conviction: if the vineyard speaks, the winery must whisper. He cultivates with care, with an almost artisanal attention to each plot, and it shows in the kind of wine he pursues: not the one that shouts ‘greatest’, but the one that stays with you in silence. The variety is the only one possible here and, at the same time, the most difficult: 100% Pinot Noir.

Chambolle Musigny is the most ethereal face of the Côte de Nuits, but its charm stems from the stone: limestone and stony soils that drain quickly, a cool climate that preserves the wine’s vigour, and a tradition obsessed with nuance. Here, elegance is not a mere adornment; it is the natural result of an austere terroir.

Production

At Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Chambolle Musigny, the harvest is hand-picked and the selection meticulous. In the cellar, Maxime works with an infusion-like approach: gentle extractions, minimal pumping over, and a maceration that prioritises finesse over muscle. He ferments with indigenous yeasts and allows the wine to mature in barrels (50% new) during a prolonged ageing process, seeking breath and vitality, not artifice. Bottling is carried out without fining or filtering, to preserve that taut, velvety texture that defines his style.

Taste

Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Chambolle Musigny opens with a nose of red cherry, clean raspberry and a hint of floral scent, like dried petals. With aeration, a citrus note (blood orange), fine spices and a cold-stone minerality emerge. On the palate, it enters lightly but expands in the mid-palate: juicy, supple, with silky tannins and an acidity that sharpens without cutting. A long finish, delicately earthy and chalky, the sort that makes you return to the glass ‘to check’.
