Description
Maxime Cheurlin took the helm at a very young age—barely 20 years old, in 2010—and, rather than ‘modernising’ Burgundy with a cosmetic facelift, he decided to do the opposite: listen more, intervene less, and let the vineyard speak in its own natural voice. That quiet courage is evident in Maxime Cheurlin Georges Noëllat Nuits Saint Georges: a Pinot Noir that seeks not easy applause, but precision. It hails from the Côte de Nuits, on east/southeast-facing slopes, with vines at altitudes of between 240 and 300 metres; here the mosaic of soils varies from one plot to the next, but the classic character of the village prevails: structure, earthiness and a crisp freshness. In Nuits Saint Georges, tradition is not a dead weight: it is a compass. And Maxime uses it to craft wines with a firm hand, without losing their edge.
Production
At Maxime Cheurlin Georges Noëllat Nuits Saint Georges, the grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with a distinctly Burgundian approach: measured extraction, more ‘infusion’ than force. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and a proportion of whole bunches (≈20%) to add spicy energy and verticality. Then comes ageing: around 18 months in French oak barrels, with a restrained use of new wood (≈33%) to clothe the wine, not perfume it. Bottling aims for purity of texture, avoiding aggressive treatments.
Taste
In Maxime Cheurlin Georges Noëllat Nuits Saint Georges, the nose is not overpowering: fresh cherry and raspberry at first, followed by the more serious notes of Nuits —undergrowth, damp earth, subtle spice —as if the wine carried a mineral undertone behind the fruit. On the palate it is dry and straightforward: a juicy attack, a mid-palate with a silky texture but with tannins that set the pace, and an acidity that does not ‘sting’ but rather sharpens the profile. The oak is there as a framework, not as a veneer. The finish is long, slightly salty, with an echo of cherry and dark herbs. A Nuits Saint Georges for those who prefer austere elegance to easy fruit.
