Description

At just 20 years old, in 2010, Maxime Cheurlin took the helm of the Noëllat family business after his grandmother Thérèse decided to hand the winery over to him: a bold, almost reckless move that turned his first vintage into a dazzling introduction. Since then, his approach has been simple yet steadfast: to preserve old vines and let them speak for themselves, without embellishment, practising sustainable and sensible viticulture, and refining a style that is more about precision than muscle. Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Gevrey Chambertin is 100% Pinot Noir and hails from the Côte de Nuits, in the heart of Burgundy, where Pinot takes on a serious character: cool slopes, capricious vintages and that layered soil—limestone, marl and clay—which sets the wine’s pace like a mineral metronome.

Production

At Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Gevrey Chambertin, the harvest is hand-picked. The grapes are usually 100% destemmed (with the occasional inclusion of some stems) and the process begins with cold maceration to lock in the aroma without extracting harshness. It ferments with indigenous yeasts, and Maxime insists on the word ‘infusion’: infrequent, gentle punching down to build structure without Dureza. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels for extended ageing—in practice, this usually lasts around 18 months, with a significant proportion of new oak (approx. 40%)—and is finally bottled, generally without fining or filtering, in pursuit of texture and authenticity.

Taste

Maxime Cheurlin Noëllat Gevrey Chambertin does not shout in the glass: it is concentrated. First comes ripe red fruit (cherry, raspberry), then a very delicate floral note —dried petal— and immediately the Gevrey Chambertin character: fresh earth, undergrowth, an echo of damp stone. On the palate, it is silky yet has backbone: firm, polished tannins that grip without scratching. The wood is not the scent of a joiner’s workshop; it is a spicy whisper (clove, a hint of vanilla ) that supports the fruit and lengthens the finish. The acidity, typical of Burgundy, cleanses and defines: the wine moves forward straight and precise, and finishes long and harmonious, leaving a sensation of contained energy rather than obvious power—like an athlete running in silence.
