The young and tender 2018 La Bota de Manzanilla 111 Florpower MMXVIII was shy and austere, but after bottling (it was bottled in February 2022), it was a bit dizzy in the nose, but the palate shows much better, like many of the 2018 wines I had seen in other bottlings. It's a cooler year with balance and freshness and aging potential.

Description
The story of this wine is born from the unrelenting curiosity and radical loyalty to the land that defines Equipo Navazos. In the heart of the legendary Pago Miraflores La Baja, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, germinates the Palomino Fino grape that gives life to this unique manzanilla, direct daughter of the 2018 vintage. La Bota de Manzanilla 111 Florpower MMXVIII is a manzanilla de pago, but it is also Florpower. And if its origin might seem contradictory, it is precisely this duality that makes it even more authentic.
Because there are no shortcuts or simplifications here. When the must for Florpower was made in 2018, part of the wine was destined from the outset for traditional biological ageing, under flor. Another part followed the usual path, without fortification. Later on, some butts of that initial Florpower were gently fortified and added to this Sanlúcar ageing process. A seemingly confusing manoeuvre, but profoundly coherent: all the grapes come from the same vineyard, from the same vines, with the same spirit of purity and listening to the terroir. The result: a vintage manzanilla with the soul of Florpower. Or perhaps a Florpower that has learned to speak the language of manzanilla.
Winemaking
After spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, La Bota de Manzanilla 111 Florpower MMXVIII was aged for a year under veil in traditional, unfortified butts, naturally reaching the necessary degrees for biological ageing. It was then lightly fortified with wine alcohol to continue its maturation for almost three years in the saline microclimate of Sanlúcar. All in old casks, unhurried, allowing time and the flower to do their work. This is not an industrial blend or a standardised product: it is a wine that expresses itself, without mould.
Taste
On the nose, La Bota de Manzanilla 111 Florpower MMXVIII displays that profile so characteristic of the great wines of the Marco: raw almond, fresh manzanilla, notes of sourdough and a slight hint of dried lemon zest. But underneath beats the soul of the vineyard: that subtle whisper of damp albariza, of Atlantic breeze carrying salt and iodine. On the palate it is pure tension: dry, sharp, with an unexpected acidity for its category and a mineral vibration that extends it beyond the palate. Organic ageing has refined its silhouette without dampening the character of the terroir. There is austerity, but also depth. Persistence. An elegance that does not seek to please, but to challenge.
The Bota de Manzanilla 111 Florpower MMXVIII is not easily explained, nor does it need to be. It is drunk with attention, it is understood with time. And it is always remembered.
