Description

In Vosne Romanée, where each climat seems to speak quietly but with authority, Maison Drouhin has always preferred to listen to the vineyard rather than impose a style. That philosophy - respect for the terroir, the grape and the wine - has been translated into bold decisions: from entrusting the winery to one of Burgundy's first female winemakers, to promoting organic and biodynamic practices when they were not yet trendy. Here, Pinot Noir does not seek make-up; it seeks truth.

Joseph Drouhin Vosne Romanée 1er Cru is born in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, an appellation where elegance is not an ornament, but a consequence. The marl and limestone soils provide drainage, tension and that discreet minerality that sustains the wine from below, while the continental climate sharpens the ripeness and preserves the nerve. The local tradition is ancient - sites linked to Roman times and centuries of viticulture - but Drouhin interprets it with modern precision: clean fruit, fine structure, and that sense of "quiet luxury" that only Vosne knows how to give.

Winemaking

At Joseph Drouhin Vosne Romanée 1er Cru, the grapes are harvested by hand, in small crates, with careful selection. Depending on the vintage, the winery works with 20-50% of whole bunches, seeking perfume, freshness and a leaner tannin. Fermentation and maceration for 2 to 3 weeks in open vats, with measured extraction and indigenous yeasts to maintain the local character. Pressed in vertical press, separating fractions by tasting. Ageing extends 14-18 months in French oak barrels, with about 25% new wood, refining without covering the identity of the Pinot.

Taste

In Joseph Drouhin Vosne Romanée 1er Cru, the colour is deep, bright ruby. The nose suggests violet, cherry and fine strawberry, with a second, more serious layer: cocoa, coffee and a flash of undergrowth/truffle when air enters. The palate is pure Vosne: precise attack, ripe red fruit without shrillness, bright acidity and silky tannin that clings like fresh velvet. The centre gains spices -pepper, bitter chocolate- and the finish lengthens elegant, refined, leaving a perfumed and mineral trace. It doesn't shout: it lingers.
