The first of its kind, Gaubys' red 2009 Coume Gineste represents, as one might expect, Grenache Noir neighboring to as well as inter-planted with Grenache Blanc and -Gris such as have long informed a white cuvee of this same name. The lieu-dit in which the three parcels that inform this cuvee are found are largely quite chalky - but with one area of dark schiste - as well as sheltered. Cooked and distilled black raspberry inform a penetrating, high-toned nose, the berries being joined by cocoa powder and salted caramel on a firm, rather obviously tannic, moderately juicy palate. There are around 1,000 bottles of this wine that was aged in a small Stockinger foudre. I would want to monitor it carefully over the next couple of years before hazarding a prognosis as to its long-term age-ability.
