Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The fresh and pretty pale red 2023 Fertans Ploussard comes from a 70-year-old south-facing vineyard and was produced with the traditional hand-destemming in the vineyard. It has a somewhat orangey color, with a very light profile, with very fine tannins and contained ripeness, 12.5% alcohol and unnoticeable oak. 4,000 bottles produced. Marin calls it a barbecue wine. It's delicious.

Features

Description

From the heart of the Jura, Fumey-Chatelain - founded by Raphaël Fumey and Adeline Chatelain in the 1990s - has become a benchmark for authenticity and precision. Fumey Chatelain Fertans Ploussard comes from a 70-year-old south-facing plot on clay-limestone soils in Montigny-lès-Arsures, the birthplace of the finest Ploussard. After a devastating frost in 1991, the couple decided to vinify what little was left: a courageous decision that sealed the fate of the domaine. Today, their son Marin is driving the winery towards more organic viticulture, keeping alive the connection with the land and the minimalist approach that defines this wine.

Winemaking

Fumey Chatelain Fertans Ploussard is made with meticulous hand sorting and destemming by hand directly in the vineyard, a traditional technique that avoids unnecessary breakage of the grapes. Fermentation is carried out spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, without the addition of sulphites in the early stages. Ageing is carried out in neutral barrels, with no intention of adding oak notes, and bottling is done with minimal intervention. The result: a wine of just 12.5% alcohol, pure and delicate.

Taste

Pale red with orange highlights, Fumey Chatelain Fertans Ploussard expresses itself with a subtle nose of wild strawberry, dried rose petal, damp earth and a slightly spicy background. The palate is light, with extremely fine tannins, airy structure and a lively acidity that gives tension without overwhelm. There are mineral notes, an elegant earthy echo, and a saline persistence that invites the next sip. It doesn't seek fruit prominence, but quiet depth. Marin calls it a barbecue wine, and it's true: fresh, versatile and delicious, ideal to accompany everything from roast poultry to grilled vegetables, without stealing the limelight. A pure Jura, without make-up.
