The 2023 Castiñeiro Albariño has an explosive nose, perfumed, floral and fragrant, very clean, attractive and high-pitched. This comes from a 44-year-old vineyard in Aldea do Monte in Lois, and it fermented and matured in raw 375-liter white clay amphorae for six months. This is very different from the rest of the Albariños, even they consider it a rarity. It has a mellow palate with an ethereal feeling to it, with great purity, elegance and fine minerality. Carralcoba is more serious, whereas this is more jovial. 1,530 bottles produced.

Description

From the placid vineyards of Val do Salnés, Eulogio Pomares Castiñeiro Albariño emerges as a jewel born of a bold intuition: Eulogio Pomares, after making a name for himself at the historic Zárate family winery, decided to devote himself entirely to the search for the most authentic terroir of the Rías Baixas. On just 0.3 hectares of a site called Castiñeiro, planted on granitic soils bathed in Atlantic mist, he undertook the delicate mission of making an Albariño wine that reflected mineral strength and Atlantic elegance. It was an uncompromising commitment: respectful viticulture, manual harvesting and a tiny plot that favours quality over quantity, as if the vineyard were a secret sanctuary revealed only to those who know how to look carefully. This Albariño comes from that terroir, and its history is, at the same time, that of a region and of a man.

Winemaking

The harvest for Eulogio Pomares Castiñeiro Albariño is carried out by hand, as each cluster must arrive at the winery intact. After an outstanding selection, the grapes are always pressed whole -withoutdestemming- ina pneumatic press, to preserve the complexity and fragility of the skin. The resulting must begins its fermentation and settling in white clay amphorae, vinifying in an ancient material that favours micro-oxygenation and textural expression. It remains on its fine lees for six months, without batônnage, allowing it to evolve serenely and respectfully, the result of a restrained ageing process that seeks subtle nuances rather than flaunting richness.

Taste

When approaching Eulogio Pomares Castiñeiro Albariño to the glass, the first impression is that of a delicate and pure fragrance: notes of wilted flowers, hints of sunflower seeds and a barely oxidative profile, which gives character without dominating. In the mouth, the wine announces itself with a tense, almost athletic attack, in which the acidity is gently modulated, delivering a velvety texture that invites a second sip. It reveals itself to be sophisticated, unpretentious, with a salinity reminiscent of sea foam and a mineral tension that furrows the tongue with refined precision. Aromatic lightness does not equate to simplicity, as echoes of white fruit and smooth citrus emerge on the palate, balanced by the vibrant acidity that is the hallmark of the house. The whole is elegantly sustained, like a cyclonic whisper, and leaves an impression of pure, mineral, unostentatious freshness, a worthy challenge to those who are looking for more than just fruity exuberance in Albariño.
