Description
For years, Émilien Feneuil was "the man of the parcels": he farmed with obsessive precision around Sermiers (Montagne de Reims) and sold most of his grapes. Until he made an uncomfortable decision in Champagne: to bottle his truth, albeit in tiny quantities. His first own vintage came in 2015, made in the cellars of vignerons friends; and later, after the 2020 vintage, he took another bold step by buying his own winery.
Emilien Feneuil Les Puits Blanc de Noirs 1er cru is that philosophy at its purest: a Champagne Blanc de Noirs of 100% Pinot Noir in Premier Cru, where the Montagne de Reims shows its most tactile side - cool climate, exposed slopes and a chalk/limestone matrix with clay presence that imprints nerve and a very marked "chalky" sensation. In the vineyard, the line is clear: certified organic viticulture and a reading of the land that prioritises life and balance over yield, to capture the identity of the place without make-up.
Winemaking
In Emilien Feneuil Les Puits Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru, the grapes are carefully pressed; the must is fermented with indigenous yeasts and the base wine is aged for about 10 months in used barrels (second year) to gain relief without "wood flavour". Then comes the second fermentation in the bottle and a little negotiable patience: at least 48 months on the lees before disgorgement, refining bubbles, texture and depth. The result is a terroirChampagne: more mineral energy and structure than sweetness or cosmetics.
Taste
In Emilien Feneuil Les Puits Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru, it is not a Blanc de Noirs of easy applause: tension rules here. The bubbles come out very fine, like chalk dust, and the nose combines fresh citrus and firm apple with a subtle background of fine bread and dried fruits, more suggestive than evident. On the palate the serious stuff appears: red fruit barely hinted at, a saline trace that makes you salivate and a "savoury" phenolic structure that supports the wine without hardening it. It has depth, but walks straight ahead; it finishes long, chalky, with an addictive austerity and an umami echo that begs to be tasted (poultry, mushrooms, red tuna).
