Description
In Champagne almost everyone thinks of bubbles; Émilien Feneuil (Sermiers, Petite Montagne de Reims) heard the crunch of the ground before the whisper of the foam. He inherited the family domaine, but for years he sold grapes to other houses. The brave twist came when he decided to bottle his own reading of the place: less "recipe", more vineyard. On one of its slopes he found a small miracle of herbs, flowers and spontaneous trees where the surrounding soil was exhausted; since then he has been working to let the ecosystem rule, not aesthetics. Real biodiversity, minimal intervention, and a living viticulture that adjusts every year as a compass adjusts every year. Emilien Feneuil Coteaux Champenois Rosé Les Maçonnettes is his Champagne without bubbles, a Coteaux Champenois Rosé 100% Pinot Noir, born from cold slopes on a mosaic of sand, marl, clay and chalk, that chalk that here does not shout, but signs the wine with precision.
Winemaking
At Emilien Feneuil Coteaux Champenois Rosé Les Maçonnettes, the grapes are harvested by hand in search of fresh, healthy grapes. Gentle pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeasts and no aromatic make-up. The wine is aged calmly in used barrels (wood as a container, not as a perfume), allowing the transformations to take place without forcing them, and avoiding aggressive fining or filtering. The ageing is extended by 24 months in French oak, refining texture and tension. Sulphur is kept to a minimum: just enough to protect, never to tame.
Taste
There is no easy fruit in Emilien Feneuil Coteaux Champenois Rosé Les Maçonnettes: this is a terroir rosé. The nose opens with wild strawberry and raspberry, a fine citrus trace and a barely floral note, like petals brushed on cold stone. The palate enters sharp and straight, with acidity setting the pace: crisp red fruit, an echo of sour cherry and a very restrained stone/nectarine sensation. The oak is not noticeable as a flavour, but as a backbone supporting the centre of the palate. The finish is the most champenois gesture: dry, saline, chalky, long, cleansing, with a persistence that invites to the table rather than the aperitif. A serious rosé, nervous and addictive in its purity.
