Description

Domaine De Villaine was born from the soul of Bouzeron, a small AOC in the Côte Chalonnaise where Aubert de Villaine - yes, the same man from Romanée-Conti - decided in the 1970s to worship the land without artifice, moving away from the glitz of the Côte de Nuits. On this 1.8 ha plot, farmed organically for decades, old Pinot Noir vines between 35 and 45 years old sink their roots into clay-limestone soils that give the wines tension, verticality and a deeply mineral character. The idea behind Domaine De Villaine Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise La Digoine was always simple and radical: to create an honest Burgundian red, without make-up, that speaks softly but clearly, and reflects the nobility of the terroir rather than the hand of man.

Winemaking

The Domaine De Villaine Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise La Digoine is harvested by hand, with a rigorous selection of bunches right from the vineyard. Forty percent of the bunches enter the traditional wooden vats with stalks, where the must ferments with indigenous yeasts. During 10 to 12 days, a precise extraction is sought: more skin than seed, more structure than opulence. There is no new barrel. The wine remains in these vats for 10 to 12 months, gaining texture without losing purity. It is a deliberately restrained approach, avoiding embellishments to let the wine evolve with its own pulse.

Taste

Domaine De Villaine Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise La Digoine is a lesson in Burgundian finesse. The nose offers a restrained palette of ripe red fruits - tart cherry, fresh raspberry - with faint floral hints and an earthy background reminiscent of the forest after rain. As the wine aerates, subtle notes of liquorice, wild mint and dried leaves emerge. On the palate, the attack is clean, agile, with a vibrant acidity that stretches the wine and gives it nerve. The tannins are fine, dusty, perfectly integrated. As it progresses, it reveals its saline minerality and lingering freshness. This is not a Pinot for those looking for fruity exuberance: here there is tension, subtlety and a common thread which is the soil. A sober, precise wine, and deeply Burgundian in spirit.
