Description
From its origin, Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Montpalais was born as an act of pure devotion to the land. In 1971, Aubert and Pamela de Villaine - yes, the same Aubert linked to the mythical Domaine de la Romanée-Conti - decided to look to the south of Burgundy, to the Côte Chalonnaise. There they discovered the small Montpalais plot, a first cru in Rully with clay, limestone and sandy soils that, even today, seems to retain the memory of the Jurassic sea that formed it. They planted Chardonnay, convinced that this terroir could express purity, tension and minerality without adornment or artifice. Thus was born a wine that does not seek to impress, but rather to speak honestly of its place of origin. A courageous decision in a region overshadowed by the neighbouring Côte d'Or, but which reveals its full potential here.
Winemaking
The grapes for Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Montpalais - coming from young vines barely 10 years old - are harvested by hand and fermented for 8 days in barrel, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. The wine is aged for 12 to 18 months, with 25 % of new barrels that provide structure without dominating the profile. Subsequently, it rests for another 12 months in the bottle. No unnecessary filtering or fining: the approach is to intervene as little as possible to preserve the wine's natural energy.
Taste
Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Montpalais unfolds with restrained elegance. On the nose, it offers aromas of white flowers, citrus peel and wet stone, accompanied by delicate notes of vanilla and raw almond. There is fruit - white peach, pear, a touch of apricot - but always under the control of vibrant acidity. The palate is taut, silky-textured but sharp, with a long, saline finish, marked by a chalky minerality that invites pause. A profile more reminiscent of a restrained Meursault than an exuberant white: it is depth without fat, precision without stiffness. A wine that evolves with the air, gaining herbal nuances, subtle honey and lime zest notes. Ideal for those who are looking for white wines with nerve, purity and a discreet elegance that does not need to raise its voice to be heard.
