Description
Just six kilometres from the Mediterranean, in the heart of the Baix Penedès, Eduard Pié cultivates his vines with the conviction that wine should be a reflection of the landscape without interference. In Sicus, his personal project, each bottle is an extension of the land, the climate and conscious decisions that avoid any superfluous ornamentation. In the case of Sicus Garrut Sassy, that philosophy is expressed in an unusual combination: Garrut (the local name for Monastrell) and Malvasía, two varieties that rarely coincide, but which here come together in a precise, almost provocative harmony.
The single vineyard La Masia, planted at an altitude of 215 metres above sea level on calcareous clay-lime soils -moderately basic and shallow-, gives the wine a tension and freshness that is uncommon in Mediterranean areas. The vines, still young at 12 years of age, offer a vibrant expression without artifice, marked by the proximity of the sea and the direct influence of the sea winds.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with a meticulous selection of bunches of grapes at the right point of ripeness. The grapes are introduced whole, without destemming, into tanks where Sicus Garrut Sassy undergoes fermentation by infusion for three months, without mechanical intervention: no punching down or pumping over. The wine is separated from the cap by its own weight, without pressing, respecting the integrity of the juice as much as possible. Subsequently, Sicus Garrut Sassy spends seven months in stainless steel tanks, without contact with wood, allowing the fruit and the saline character of the vineyard to express themselves without filters.
Taste
Sicus Garrut Sassy opens with a restrained, ethereal nose. Notes of pomegranate, sour cherry and dried flower appear, intertwined with a saline echo and a sense of Mediterranean herbs, such as thyme or wild fennel. There is no exuberance, but discretion and clarity.
On the palate, Sicus Garrut Sassy is delicate but vibrant, with an incisive acidity that sets the pace and a light, almost watery texture that makes it extremely drinkable. The finish is long, dry and saline, with a mineral persistence reminiscent of white soil and sea breeze. A wine that undoubtedly behaves more like a white than a red, and which invites us to rethink the limits of what is possible in the Mediterranean.
