Description

At the top of the El Roldonar estate, just six kilometres from the Mediterranean, a wine is born that does not shout, but leaves its mark. Sicus Sumoi is the result of a vision that goes against the grain: that of Eduard Pié, a non-conformist winegrower who decided to give the spotlight back to the native varieties of the Penedès, far from the noise of industrial Cava. Sumoi - or Sumoll, according to the traditional spelling - is one of those forgotten, difficult grapes, with thin skin, long ripening and nervous acidity. But in Eduard's hands it becomes a tool for pure expression of the landscape. The vines, planted in 1960 on deep, moderately basic loamy-limestone soils, grow at an altitude of 185 metres above sea level, caressed by the salty breezes from the nearby sea. Grown organically and with minimal intervention, these vines produce small, concentrated bunches of grapes, which Eduard harvests by hand with surgical precision. Nothing is improvised, but everything flows naturally.

Winemaking

The vinification process of Sicus Sumoi is almost an act of contemplation. The whole bunches are placed in tanks and left to infuse for three months, without destemming, without pressing, without additives. It is the weight of the grapes themselves that releases the must, in a slow fermentation, guided by indigenous yeasts. There is no forced extraction, just time and trust in the fruit. After this period, the wine is gently devatted and transferred to stainless steel tanks, where Sicus Sumoi rests for seven months. There is no wood, no fining, no filtering: just wine and silence.

Taste

Sicus Sumoi is a wine that disarms with its lightness and precision. To the eye, it has a translucent, almost ethereal ruby colour. On the nose, it is delicate but expressive: wild strawberry, sour cherry and pomegranate skin blend with nuances of dry leaf, damp earth and Mediterranean herbs. There is an airy sensation, like a wine that breathes rather than speaks. On the palate, it is light, electric, with a vibrant acidity that awakens the palate. The tannins are subtle, barely a caress, but they mark a juicy, enveloping texture. The palate is quick but not fleeting: the wine leaves a saline, chalky, almost umami minerality that makes it ideal to accompany light Mediterranean dishes, baked fish or grilled vegetables. It is not a wine for everyone. It is for those who are looking for authenticity, freshness and a direct connection with the land. A Mediterranean red wine without make-up, with a raw soul and serene beauty.
