Description
In the gentle hills of the Baix Penedès, just eight kilometres from the Mediterranean, Eduard Pié cultivates more than just vines: he cultivates memory, landscape and a vision deeply rooted in his environment. On his El Corral del Segarra estate, with its loamy, calcareous soils, he has decided to work with a variety that is as historic as it is demanding: Malvasía de Sitges. A delicate grape, with loose clusters, difficult to vinify, but capable of delivering a unique aromatic and textural expression when it is respected. It was not an easy decision; it was an act of commitment to the land, to the past and to a way of making wine that renounces the obvious to seek the essential.
The vines, which range in age from 11 to 48 years old, are located 240 metres above sea level, breathingthe sea breeze that comes from the horizon. The climate is typically Mediterranean, but is tempered by the altitude and the proximity of the sea, which allows for a slow ripening process and an extraordinary preservation of acidity. The deep, moderately basic soil adds a layer of tension and salinity to the character of the wine.
Winemaking
True to his minimal intervention approach, Eduard harvests the grapes by hand and deposits them whole, with stems, in tanks where they remain for three months in infusion-fermentation, without pumping over or aggressive extraction. There is no pressing: the wine is separated from the cap by gravity, draining drop by drop under its own weight. This radical gesture preserves the essence of the fruit and avoids over-extraction of tannins or bitterness. Sicus Malvasía is aged for seven months in stainless steel, which preserves the freshness, varietal purity and vibrancy of the terroir.
Taste
Sicus Malvasía, light in alcohol but immense in character, opens with notes of green citrus, lime peel, a faint flash of dried jasmine and a vibrant salinity that evokes the nearby sea. The palate is sharp, pure, with a sharp, edgy acidity that runs across the palate like a chalk line. There is no fat, no ornamentation: just bone, tension and a fine, almost airy texture. The finish is dry, slightly bitter, with hints of raw almond, fennel and sea salt.
