Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Pur Xarel.lo, a wine they first produced in 2009, comes from a very warm and dry vintage and has more notes of dry hay and straw, more Mediterranean. It comes from older vineyards, not planted by themselves (as they started planting some 25 years ago), from different plots. They couldn't believe it wasn't going to rain; it was cruel, because the weather forecast always said there would be rain in seven to eight days, and it was mentally very difficult. Xarel.lo is strong and it had reserves from 2021, but they suffered strong peaks of heat. Because they work more vineyards than they need (more than 50% of the 70 hectares in total they work, owned and rented), they were able to select and discard and use the best grapes to keep the balance. As I saw in the rest of wines from 2022 and 2023, the conditions of the year were transmitted to the wines in a very subtle way; they have a more Mediterranean profile but are never heavy or flat, they keep the poise and balance. It's clean and tasty and has a salty finish. Coming from hell, alcohol of 12.44% feels almost impossible. Their wines are always more austere and stonier, mineral and shy, not about fruit; they are textured and saline. Superb! 6,357 bottles and 103 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2023.
