Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The single-vineyard wine from Toro 2022 Pago La Jara was cropped from a vintage that was defined by extreme, record-breaking weather, with a dry winter and warm April, leading to early budbreak, followed by severe drought and repeated heat waves, including an exceptionally hot June. Despite significant water stress, old vines showed strong resilience and achieved balanced ripening, with an early harvest carried out to preserve freshness. The resulting wines are powerful and structured, with round tannins and a deep expression of ripe black fruit. It's quite fresh for the warm and dry conditions of the year, with notes of dark berry fruit, grenadine and fruit in liqueur. It has good ripeness and 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.7 and 4.54 grams of acidity. The quality of the tannins is not as perfect as in years with a longer cycle; here, the rushed ripeness resulted in a slightly dusty texture and a faint sensation of rusticity that's quite chalky. It fermented in 3,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrels and 1,500-liter foudres for 15 to 18 months. Only 2,183 bottles were produced. It was bottled in May 2024, which is a little earlier than previous years.

Description
Pago La Jara is an exceptional wine made by Telmo Rodríguez in the Toro region. This wine is known for its limited production and high quality, the result of a careful winemaking and ageing process.
Winemaking
The grapes come from five high quality plots, composed almost entirely of the Tinta de Toro variety with a small percentage of Albillo Mayor. The grapes, not completely destemmed, are fermented with indigenous yeasts in 3,000-kilo wooden vats. The wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in 225-litre oak barrels and 1,500-litre foudres.
Taste
Pago La Jara stands out for its harmonious and elegant taste, with fine and well-integrated tannins. Its freshness and moderate ripeness are complemented by a smoky and stony touch, thanks to the ageing in large volumes of oak. This combination allows the wine to retain its unique character, allowing it to breathe and develop a distinctive personality. On the palate, the wine offers good balance and harmony, with a structure that promises a positive and prolonged development in bottle.
