Description
In Val do Salnés (D.O. Rías Baixas), where almost everyone looks to the Atlantic through Albariño, Rodrigo Méndez decided to listen to another voice: that of the forgotten reds. O Raio Da Vella Espadeiro was born from an idea as simple as it is brave: to create a Galician red wine that does not "imitate" anyone, but is a direct translation of the coast. To do so, he chose 100% Espadeiro, a very fine, nervous and uncomplacent variety, and planted it at sea level in Castrelo, in a small vineyard of 1.5 hectares that he built together with his winemaker friend Carlos Pazo. Here the soil rules: granitic soil with sand and kaolin, poor, draining, almost ascetic; the Atlantic climate finishes the character with humidity, saline breeze and changing light. The result is not looking for muscle: it is looking for truth.
Winemaking
At O Raio Da Vella Espadeiro, the grapes are harvested by hand in small boxes, prioritising freshness and precision. The winery works with a minimum intervention mentality so as not to erase the landscape: fermentations that respect the varietal pulse and a measured ageing process to give structure without making up. O Raio Da Vella Espadeiro spends around 11-12 months in used wood, seeking texture and tension rather than oak flavours, and rests before bottling so that everything is sewn inside without losing nerve. The alcohol content tends to hover around ~12% vol., reinforcing that feeling of Atlantic lightness.
Taste
In O Raio Da Vella Espadeiro, the nose brings no fireworks: there is fresh red fruit (sour cherry, red currant), a touch of pomegranate and a sense of minerality reminiscent of wet rock after rain. There are fine herbal notes - bay leaf, mint, a hint of green - and a very discreet hint of white pepper. On the palate it is a wine of line, not volume: fine tannin, almost tea-like, and a vibrant acidity that stretches the drink and makes you salivate. The red fruit crunches, a slightly bitter note of citrus peel appears and, on the finish, that unmistakable signature: salinity and a long, clean finish, with an austere, refreshing echo that begs to be paired with oily fish, roast poultry or simply another glass.
