Winemaking
Skin contact for 12 months with partially destemmed grapes (50%). Free-run alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in 600-litre oak vats. Aged for 20 months in 1,200 litre vats. Bottled unfined, unfiltered and without added sulphites.
Description
Muster Erde orange wine is made from vines that are approximately 30 years old. This wine is a long skin-maceration cuvée that evokes the very essence of the earth, or"Erde" in German. This connection with the earth is not only reflected in its name, but also in its unique taste and texture, which are the result of meticulous winemaking.
Elaboration
The grape varieties used in this wine are Sauvignon Blanc and Morillon (Chardonnay). The choice of these varieties, together with the Opok soil type, composed of limestone and clay loam, contributes to its distinctive flavour profile. During production, the grapes are harvested by hand and half of them are destemmed. They are then macerated with their skins for 12 months. After this process, the wine is transferred to 1,200-litre oval oak casks for ageing for approximately 20 months. Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtering and no sulphur is added.
Taste
Muster Erde is an experience in itself. Its personality is bold and distinctive, with prominent herbal notes and ripe fruit aromas. The dense earthy flavour is its hallmark, inviting those who taste it to immerse themselves in a sensory adventure that can last for days. When tasted, notes of guava, honey, peach, apricot, citrus, blood orange, grapefruit, thyme, yellow apple, mango and passion fruit can be perceived. However, its taste is not for everyone; some may find it dry and alcoholic, and not as pleasant as they expected.
