Description

In Ambonnay, where the chalk emerges under a thin layer of soil and the wind draws the memory of centuries, Benoît Marguet decided not only to make Champagne, but to translate the soul of the terroir into bubbles. With a rigorous, uncompromising biodynamic philosophy, Benoît cultivates his Grand Cru plots as if they were sacred gardens. Since 2009, he has been ploughing with horses, choosing natural treatments - some of which he has prepared himself - and almost completely dispensing with sulphur. His Marguet Shaman Grand Cru project was born as a declaration of principles: a vibrant, pure Champagne without make-up. The blend varies according to the vintage, but is based on Pinot Noir as the structural axis, with complements of Chardonnay. Both varieties are sourced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in Ambonnay and Bouzy, areas historically renowned for their power and precision.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-picked at optimum ripeness, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in used barrels for several months, without aggressive filtering or correction. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally. It is bottled without dosage or with a token minimum, which reinforces its dry and direct profile. Each bottle of Marguet Shaman Grand Cru contains a base vintage and a small portion of oak-aged reserve wines, which adds complexity without sacrificing freshness. The wine rests for 30 to 48 months on its lees in the bottle before disgorging, which gives it depth, creamy texture and perfectly integrated bubbles.

Taste

On the nose, Marguet Shaman Grand Cru shows a fascinating aromatic tension: dried flowers, wild raspberries, red apple, orange peel and spicy notes reminiscent of incense. All wrapped up in a mineral sensation reminiscent of wet stone and chalk. At first sip, the texture is creamy but sharp, like silk on steel. The red fruit reappears elegantly: cherry, pink grapefruit, a faint echo of wild strawberry. The acidity is incisive but harmonious, and the bubbles caress the palate without being aggressive. Long finish, with saline notes, toasted bread and an earthy hint that recalls its biodynamic origin. There is structure, but also nerve; precision without coldness. Marguet Shaman Grand Cru is a Champagne for those who seek character and truth, not artifice.
