Description
Benoît Marguet does not make champagne. He cultivates a message. From Ambonnay, one of the most coveted terroirs in the Montagne de Reims, his vision is radical in form, but deeply traditional in substance: biodynamic without concessions, without herbicides, without added sulphur, without dosage, without intervention beyond the essential. The Marguet Ambonnay Freedom Grand Cru cuvée is born of this philosophy, as a declaration of principles: free, naked wine, without artifice. Here, the land speaks. And it does so with a firm voice: chalky soils, clay-limestone sands, old vines of Pinot Noir (63%) and Chardonnay (37%), cultivated with animal traction -Belle and Urban, their horses- and minimal human intervention. Ambonnay's continental climate imparts concentration and tension, while the altitude and orientation of the plots preserve a vibrant natural freshness.
Winemaking
Each parcel is vinified separately, in used oak barrels, with no commercial yeasts, no thermal control and no fining. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously, and the wine rests for several months on lees in wood before bottling. There is no dosage or filtration. Marguet Ambonnay Freedom Grand Cru is aged for three to four years in the bottle before disgorgement, keeping sulphur content to a minimum. In many editions it is not even disgorged, remaining intact, a champagne that defies the rules and celebrates the power of origin.
Taste
In the glass, Marguet Ambonnay Freedom Grand Cru shows a complex and provocative sensory palette. Green apple, ripe lemon, wet chalk and toasted brioche emerge from a pure nose, with a background of dried fruits, rye bread and a spicy touch reminiscent of dried ginger. The palate is upright, with firm but perfectly integrated acidity, stretching the wine towards a long, mineral finish. The texture is creamy, dense, almost chewy, with notes of subtle raspberry, pink grapefruit and fine yeast. This is not an indulgent wine. It is cerebral, profoundly dry, with tension and a marked salinity that makes it an excellent companion to haute cuisine. A champagne for those seeking authenticity, risk and pure expression of terroir. A free wine, as its name suggests.
