Description
In Puligny Montrachet, where BurgundyChardonnay is written in chalky script and elegance is a matter of precision, Joseph Drouhin interprets terroir as something that is not corrected: it is accompanied. Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne comes from a tiny plot (1.5 ha) in the upper part of the village, a hillside that was once garenne, a refuge for wild rabbits. This almost domestic detail contrasts with the seriousness of the site: chalky soils, ochre soils, bright exposure and a Burgundian tradition that rewards nuance over volume. Drouhin has always had a quiet courage: not to force the profile with aromatic artifice, even in warm vintages, where the temptation would be to seek opulence. Here the decision is different: maturity yes, but at the service of finesse.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand in aerated crates, with sorting if necessary: here, at Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne, precision is pursued from the very first gesture. A slow pressing is carried out in a pneumatic press, separating the last pressures from the purest must. After a light racking, the must ferments directly in the barrel, where it also undergoes malolactic fermentation. Ageing lasts 16-18 months in French oak, with a use of new wood (20-25%) to build texture without erasing the chalky trace. The result is decided by tasting and analysis, always prioritising terroir and vintage.
Taste
Bright, barely golden, it displays a restrained and noble nose: white flowers, fresh almond and a thread of fine yellow fruit (pear, peach, apricot ) that does not shout, but whispers. There are echoes of hazelnut, a touch of elegant jam and that mineral/chalky sensation that defines Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne. Silky on the palate, but with backbone: fullness without heaviness, precise creaminess, and an acidity that tightens the whole like a bow. The ageing brings hints of butter, faint vanilla and toasted bread - a frame, not a protagonist. The finish is long, clean, saline-mineral, with a persistence of dried fruit and a freshness that begs to be tasted: seafood, noble fish, poultry with white sauces.
