Description
On the limestone summit of Montgueux, Emmanuel Lassaigne decided to break the rules. In a region devoted to Champagne, he made a still red wine, born from Pinot Noir, with the same devotion he applies to his sparkling wines. Thus Jacques Lassaigne Coteaux Champenois Rouge Chères Vignes, "beloved vines", a small plot of old vines that Emmanuel cultivates on a 70-year lease. An unusual long-term commitment to the land that reveals his vision: to let the terroir speak, without concessions or artifice.
The vineyard, planted on pure chalk soils, offers a precise, saline and tense expression of Pinot Noir. Montgueux enjoys a slightly warmer microclimate than the rest of Champagne, which allows for slow, balanced ripening without losing the natural freshness. The deep roots extract the chalky minerality that is perceived in every sip, making this wine a rara avis: a red Coteaux Champenois of transparent elegance.
Winemaking
Harvesting is manual and rigorous. After complete destemming, the grapes destined for Jacques Lassaigne Coteaux Champenois Rouge Chères Vignes macerate for 10 days, extracting delicate tannins and a restrained fruity expression. Then, a gentle pressing gives way to a one-year ageing in neutral oak foudre, without aromatic intervention. The wine is bottled without fining, filtering or sulphur addition. The intention is clear: to preserve the raw energy and pure character of the vineyard.
Taste
To the eye, Jacques Lassaigne Coteaux Champenois Rouge Chères Vignes is a limpid, almost ethereal ruby red. On the nose, it unfolds with subtlety: fresh raspberry, redcurrant, sour cherry, followed by a background of wet chalk, white pepper and dried petals. There is no opulence, but a discreet, elegant and sharp fragrance. On the palate, the wine is light but structured, with finely grained tannins and vibrant acidity that lengthens the length. Crisp red fruit intertwines with earthy notes, a hint of herbaceousness and a lingering salinity that speaks of its chalky origin. The finish is clean, dry, subtly spicy, leaving a sense of precision and tension that is more reminiscent of a great Burgundy than a Champagne wine.
