Description
In the hills of Eguisheim, where Alsace is at its most mineral, Jean-François Ginglinger tends his vines as if he were tending a wild garden. From a small plot facing east and rich in calcareous-sandy soil, Ginglinger Le Geai is born, a free and indomitable cuvée, named after a jay that used to follow him between the rows, as a symbol of irreverence and loyalty to the place. Here, far from the constraints of the Grands Crus, biodynamic viticulture is practised, without artifice, with clusters of Gewürztraminer from old vines deeply rooted in the subsoil.
Winemaking
It all begins with a rigorous manual harvest. The grapes for Ginglinger Le Geai enter the press whole, without destemming, and ferment spontaneously, without temperature control, in old oak vats. The ageing process lasts 10 months on fine lees, without racking, without sulphur, without any intervention beyond what is necessary. Bottling is done by gravity, without fining or filtering. The result is a natural and sincere wine, with all the tension of the place.
Taste
On opening Ginglinger Le Geai, there is a faint whisper of natural gas, as proof of life. On the nose, notes of green pear, cider, bitter almond and wet stone. No exuberance, no make-up. On the palate, the attack is firm, with vertical acidity and saline texture, as if the wine were channelling directly from the subsoil. The finish is long, with echoes of green tea, bitter root and dried fruit, leaving a feeling of rare purity.
It does not seek to please everyone, but it seduces those who value the raw expression of terroir. Ginglinger Le Geai is a declaration of principles: a lively, direct, almost wild wine. A wine for attentive palates and lovers of mineral tension.
