Description
A breeze of audacity swept through the vineyards of eastern Alsace when Jean Ginglinger decided - with conviction and without compromise - to transform the Gewürztraminer of the Grand Cru Steinert into something much more visceral than an ordinary aromatic wine. Sourced from vines planted on limestone and fossil-bearing marl soils on the driest and sunniest slopes of the Pfaffenheim hillside, this terroir imparts a sharp minerality and vertical tension to the Gewürztraminer. Jean, a faithful advocate of biodynamics and winemaking without artifice, found in skin maceration a way to express the untamed character of this Grand Cru. What began as an experiment became one of the most personal and extreme wines in his catalogue.
Winemaking
For Ginglinger Gewürztraminer Steiner Macération, Jean works with whole bunches of grapes that macerate for five weeks with their skins, in a spontaneous fermentation without temperature control or the addition of sulphur. This process, more common in red or "orange" wines, allows the wine to acquire tannic structure, aromatic complexity and a texture that defies the conventions of Gewürztraminer. After maceration, the wine is gently pressed and left to settle on its fine lees before bottling, without filtering or fining. The result: a dry, gastronomically powerful wine that demands attention and companionship.
Taste
The nose of Ginglinger Gewürztraminer Steiner Macération is dense and earthy, with notes of dried orange peel, spicy black tea, wilted flower and candied ginger. The palate is full and textured, with a sharp acidity balancing its glyceric character. Flavours of ripe exotic fruit, cardamom, grapefruit zest and a saline, mineral background. The finish is dry, long, with a slight astringency that invites you to the table. More than a wine, it is a statement: a Gewürztraminer without ornamentation, sincere, rebellious and deeply linked to its place of origin.
