Description
The story of Ginglinger Gewürztraminer begins with Jean-François Ginglinger's deep conviction: to rescue the true identity of the Alsatian varieties. From his estate in Pfaffenheim, he has been working biodynamically since 1999, without compromise. In a difficult vintage, he made a radical decision: to harvest only half of the Steinert Grand Cru vineyard to preserve purity and tension, sacrificing quantity for character. The result is a Gewürztraminer free of sweet clichés; no baroque exuberance here, but restrained, almost ethereal elegance.
The Alsace region, with its limestone and sandstone soils, and its continental climate of strong thermal contrasts, provides the necessary mineral base and tension for a wine that seeks more to suggest than to impose.
Winemaking
Harvesting is done by hand and the grapes are gently pressed before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large traditional Alsatian oak vats. Ginglinger Gewürztraminer remains on its fine lees until bottling in April, without fining, filtering or sulphite addition. This ageing adds depth and texture without interfering with varietal purity. It is a minimalist approach that faithfully reflects both the terroir and the producer's biodynamic philosophy.
Taste
On the pour, Ginglinger Gewürztraminer reveals subtle: wilted rose, dried flower, unripe lychee, faint spices such as dried clove and ginger. The palate is dry, nervous, almost saline, with unexpectedly lively acidity for the variety. The finish is dusty, elegant, like an old perfume forgotten in an Alsatian attic. There is a constant tension between aromatic fragility and structural firmness, with a lingering mineral base.
Perfect for those looking for depth without sweetness, texture without fat, a white with the soul of a red. A lateral Gewürztraminer, essential, without ornamentation.
