Description
In the Wachau, where the Danube carves out steep terraces and rocky slopes, F. X. Pichler has forged an identity based on precision and fidelity to the vineyard. The family, now in its seventh generation, sees wine as an exact reflection of the terroir, without artifice or unnecessary embellishment. This ethos also explains bold decisions, such as consistently upholding their own vision of the Wachau, free from any constraints. F. X. Pichler Riesling Loibner Ried Burgstall comes from a historic plot near Unterloiben, a rocky plateau that takes its name from an ancient medieval fortification first documented as early as 1248. Here, in a sunny, well-ventilated vineyard, the Riesling sinks its roots into pure gneiss and granite soils with a light layer of sand – a combination that gives the wine its austere, salty and finely mineral profile.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for F. X. Pichler Riesling Loibner Ried Burgstall is guided by a commitment to maximum purity. The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo meticulous selection upon arrival at the winery to preserve their full integrity. Following gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with the aim of keeping the expression of the Riesling and the terroir intact. The wine then rests on its fine lees for several months, gaining texture and depth without losing its tension or clarity. Every aspect of this winemaking process is designed to respect the straightforward, vibrant and transparent character of Burgstall, from the moment the fruit arrives right through to bottling.
Taste
In the glass, F. X. Pichler Riesling Loibner Ried Burgstall appears serious, pure and restrained. Aromas of white peach, fresh pear, delicate citrus and a subtle hint of pineapple emerge, always enveloped in a stony, cool minerality. On the palate, it is dry, sharp and very clean, with precise acidity that refines the overall profile. White fruit and lemon zest unfold against a salty, granitic backdrop, culminating in a long, elegant and tremendously stimulating finish. A Wachau Riesling with a refined, vertical and deeply rocky character.
