Description

F. X. Pichler did not build its reputation by following trends, but rather by delving deeper into its craft. In Oberloiben, in the heart of the Wachau, the family has been working for generations with an almost stubborn precision, always prioritising the vineyard over the winery. F. X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Loibner, made from 100% Grüner Veltliner, began as a local wine and takes its name from Loiben, the area comprising Oberloiben and Unterloiben. Its vineyards stretch along the Danube, on the Loibner Becken plain, on light, warm soils of alluvial sand carried by the river. This terroir leaves a profound mark on the wine: here, opulence does not take centre stage, but rather a very distinctive combination of serene ripeness, fluidity, tension and a fine, luminous, almost powdery minerality.

Winemaking

The philosophy behind F. X. Pichler’s Grüner Veltliner Loibner is to intervene as little as possible so that the terroir speaks clearly. The grapes arrive at the winery with that sense of purity intact, and everything is geared towards a winemaking process focused on preserving freshness, precision and varietal clarity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, an ideal medium for maintaining the Grüner Veltliner’s energy and ensuring the focus remains on its straightforward, stony profile. The aim here is not to rely on the artifice of oak or ageing that might blur the wine’s character, but rather to produce a dry, clean and well-defined white wine, polished in texture yet with sufficient edge to retain its vigour right through to bottling.

Flavour

On the nose, F. X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Loibner is restrained, yet highly expressive in its character: fresh pear, yellow apple, lime zest and that classic hint of white pepper that is the hallmark of the variety. All this unfolds against a salty, stony backdrop, more austere than exuberant. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with a lively mouthfeel and an acidity that stretches the wine without making it harsh. The fruit reappears in a restrained manner, enveloped in notes of damp gravel, dry citrus and a minerality that leaves the palate clean, salty and ready for another sip.
