Description
Domaine de Marcoux does not produce this wine to follow a trend, but to let the land speak for itself with as little interference as possible. The Armenier family has been linked to Châteauneuf du Pape for centuries, and that continuity is evident in every decision made by the domaine. When Sophie and Catherine Armenier took over the running of the estate, they did so with a rare and steadfast conviction, committing to rigorous organic viticulture and an unadulterated expression of the terroir. Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is crafted from historic plots, with oldGarnacha as its backbone and a small contribution from other traditional varieties. It is grown on soils of sand, clay, limestone and colluvial deposits in Châteauneuf du Pape, a landscape shaped by the sun of the southern Rhône, the Mistral and a winemaking tradition in which concentration is not at odds with finesse.
Winemaking
The harvest for Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is carried out by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard and a further sorting in the cellar to retain only the healthiest and most expressive fruit. Following destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, without any shortcuts or artificial flavouring. Maceration lasts for several weeks, with daily pumping-over and temperature control, aiming to extract depth, texture and complexity without making the wine harsh. After malolactic fermentation, ageing takes place mainly in concrete tanks and large oak casks, where the wine gains depth, harmony and serenity without losing the purity of the old vines’ fruit. It is a precise, understated and highly conscious winemaking process, designed to preserve the identity of these old vines.
Taste
On the nose,Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is deep and restrained, with ripe cherry, kirsch, black raspberry, wild berries, Provençal spices and a subtle hint of dried flowers. It is neither a loud nor an overly exuberant wine; its greatness lies in the calm with which it unfolds its layers. On the palate, it is full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, yet always underpinned by an inner energy that prevents any sense of heaviness. The old Garnacha brings dense, noble fruit, whilst nuances of garrigue, sweet pepper and warm earth emerge. The finish is long, silky and persistent, with power, depth and a very serious southern elegance.
