Description
Cascina Tavijn Bandita / Vino Rosso B Denominata is an exquisite creation of Cascina Tavijn, located in the Piedmont region of Italy. This wine comes from plots scattered across the steep hills of the Monferrato area of Asti, near the Verrua family's hometown of Scurzolengo. It is composed entirely of the red variety Barbera, with an average age of the vines of around 40 years. The Verrua family farms organically, tending and harvesting the grapes entirely by hand.
The wine's label features a playful depiction of winemaker Nadia Verrua as a "bandita", made by family friend and artist Gianluca Cannizzo. The wine was named "Bandita" for a few vintages until legal pressure from an Argentinian winery forced the family to abandon the name, adopting "B" instead. Over the years, this wine has evolved from DOC Barbera d'Asti to IGT Piemonte, and is now presented as Vino Rosso.
Winemaking
On entry to the winery the grapes are destemmed, keeping the berries whole, and gently pressed without breaking the skins, just enough to start a fermentation with indigenous yeasts in vats. Fermentations are prolonged in this cold cellar, as are the macerations, which can last up to 2 months. The wine is then aged for a year in stainless steel vats and old Slovenian oak foudres before being bottled unfiltered and without the addition of sulphur.
Taste
The primary aromas are dominated by the presence of black fruits. In the secondary aromas, toasted aromas can be perceived, while in the tertiary aromas, liquorice and tobacco notes can be distinguished. This wine evokes nostalgic memories, such as the family furniture made of mahogany wood. It also has a slight meaty aroma reminiscent of duck pâté.
