Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barroca is a testament to its terroir, with wild herbs, dark earth and dusty notes enveloping black and red fruit tones. Medium-bodied, it offers a fresh mouthfeel of black cherry and an herbal finish. Energizing acidity accompanies fine-grained tannins, making it a dynamic choice. Only 1,974 bottles were produced.

Description

There is a quiet bravery in the Swartland: that of not "correcting" what time has already fine-tuned. In Kalmoesfontein, the Badenhorsts looked to the old Cape vineyards and less obvious varieties, and chose to listen to the land rather than to fashion. In Badenhorst Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca that philosophy becomes tangible: Tinta Barocca (100%) born from a plot planted in 1966, a vineyard that has suffered vine loss over the years. Instead of replanting in a uniform manner, here they practice an almost artisanal gesture: they bury long shoots so that they can take root and "fill in" the gaps; the new vine becomes an extension of its "mother". This slow and patient decision sums up the character of the wine: continuity, not make-up.

The vineyard is in Paardeberg, on decomposed granite, with south-east exposure and 5.5 ha of extension. Swartland's red wine gains its signature here: intense light, dry breezes and poor soils that force the vines to tighten and concentrate the essentials. The Tinta Barocca variety - so associated with Portugal - finds a surprising home in South Africa: fresh fruit, edgy tannin and a mineral undertone that is not manufactured in the cellar.

Winemaking

At Badenhorst Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca, the grapes are meticulously sorted in the vineyard and transported in small crates. They spend the night in a refrigerated container to preserve freshness. Half of the bunches are destemmed and fermented in a concrete tank, with daily pumping over. When fermentation is almost complete, the wine is pressed and racked into 2,000 litre vats where it rests for 11 months before bottling.

Taste

Badenhorst Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca is not a lush red: it is precise. Nose of black cherry and raspberry, pepper and clove, with a hint of black tea and dry earth. Juicy but straight on the palate, medium-bodied, with lively acidity that sharpens and fine, grainy tannin, more elegant grip than muscle. The ripe fruit never falls into sweetness; tension commands, and the finish stretches out with spices, a subtle smoky echo and a salivating cleanliness that begs for embers, lamb or mushrooms.
