Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has turned out well, unfurling to reveal aromas of crisp yellow apple, citrus oil and fresh peach mingled with hints of white flowers and clear honey. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a charming core of fruit that cloaks its succulent acids. This has fleshed out since I tasted it in barrel, yet it remains an unusually precocious, open-knit rendition of this cuvée (which debuted in 1974).

Features

Description

Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Blagny is an exceptional white wine made in the Burgundy region of France. It comes from a single half-hectare plot of vines planted in the 1950s and young vines planted in 2009. This wine is composed mainly of Chardonnay grapes grown in chalky and clay soils, which give the wine a remarkable minerality and complexity. The fruit comes from the lieu-dit La Pièce Sous le Bois, an area renowned for its excellent terroir.

Winemaking

The grapes are gently pressed with a pneumatic press, with little or no decanting of the must. Both primary and malolactic fermentations are carried out in oak barrels, of which only 20% are new. No lees stirring is carried out during this process. The wine is aged for 20 to 23 months in 4-5 year old barrels, which gives it a robust structure and remarkable complexity.

Taste

Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Blagny is distinguished by its complex and elegant aromatic profile. On the nose, it displays aromas of apple blossom and honeysuckle, with notes of lemongrass and ginger. On the palate, it is a well-balanced wine, with a spicy entry leading to a concentrated and powerful finish that coats the palate. The palate flavours reflect notes of green apple, honey and a hint of butter, culminating in a long, creamy finish. This wine has the capacity to evolve favourably with a few more years in bottle, further developing its complexity and depth.
The combination of vibrant acidity and chalky structure provides a perfect balance, making this wine an excellent choice to accompany seafood, oily fish and poultry dishes. Its complexity and balance enhance the flavours of the food, making every sip an exquisite experience.
