Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Their Syrah 2021 Pago Garduña comes from vines planted in1994 at 810 meters above sea level on limestone soils and was harvested on October 20. The destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented in stainless steel with the yeasts they selected in 1998 and had a short maceration of eight days. The wine matured for 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% of them new. The nose jumps from the glass and is really impressive and captivating, mixing aromas of black olives and tapenade with Mediterranean herbs and abundant exotic spices, toast and smoke. It's full-bodied, juicy and ripe at 14.6% alcohol, with a pH of 3.52 and 5.39 grams of acidity that keeps it balanced. It seems like Syrah excels in cooler years. 5,250 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

Features

Description

Abadía Retuerta Pago Garduña, an oenological jewel of the Abadía Retuerta winery, is an exceptional single varietal wine made entirely from Syrah grapes. This wine, originally from Sardón de Duero in Valladolid, Spain, is the result of a careful selection of grapes grown in vineyards located at an altitude of up to 850 metres above sea level, in limestone soils and under a continental climate.

Winemaking

The winemaking of Abadía Retuerta Pago Garduña involves meticulous attention to detail. After harvesting, the grapes are sorted on a sorting table and then destemmed. Maceration is extended for 25 days, followed by fermentation at 28°C. Malolactic fermentation and ageing for 16 months in new French Allier oak barrels adds complexity and elegance to the wine.

Taste

Abadía Retuerta Pago Garduña is distinguished by its velvety and enveloping profile, with soft and ripe tannins that delight the palate. On the nose, this wine reveals an aromatic complexity dominated by ripe cherries and ripe plums, complemented by floral notes of hibiscus, spices, toast and cocoa. On the palate, it is opulent and suggestive, with remarkable length and breadth. This red wine is an example of balance and smoothness, with a gentle acidity and seductive maturity. Its dark cherry colour with violet reflections and its high robe reflect its intensity and depth.
