Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2019 was a warm and dry year when the 2019 Pago Negralada, a single-vineyard Tempranillo from the lower part of the estate, a cooler place adequate for this short-cycle variety, showed good ripeness and a very good homogeneous vintage. The grapes fermented with their own isolated yeasts for 12 days, as extraction is quick, and the wine matured for 17 months in oak barrels, 66% of them new. The oak is neatly integrated, and the wine is medium to full-bodied and has a soft texture and the mellow mouthfeel from a warm and ripe vintage. 21,640 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021.

Features

Description

Abadía Retuerta Pago Negralada is an exceptional wine that reflects the essence of Tempranillo, the only variety used in its production. This single varietal wine, from vineyards located in Sardón de Duero, Valladolid, is grown in soils of deep gravel and sand on the surface, at an altitude of 850 metres above sea level.

Winemaking

The production of Abadía Retuerta Pago Negralada includes a very short maceration of 9 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in half new and half used barrels. It is aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, which contributes to its unique flavour profile.

Taste

Abadía Retuerta Pago Negralada is characterised by a deep and vibrant flavour, with austere tannins. On the nose, aromas of candied and black fruit, such as black plums, blackberries and picota cherries, are complemented by balsamic and spicy notes of pine, black liquorice and smoke. On the palate, this wine stands out for its vibrant acidity and remarkable depth, enveloping the palate with a silky, fresh texture and leaving an elegant, lingering impression. Flavours of fresh red and black fruits are nuanced by notes of spice, wood and subtle mineral nuances, creating an exquisite taste experience of limited production.
