Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

There was no 2022 Valtosca because the hail affected the earlier-ripening varieties—Syrah and also Garnacha—so they jumped to the 2023 Valtosca for their Syrah. 2023 was a year when they could pick the variety a little later with full development of aromas and flavors. The wine is completely different form the rest; it's a different year and a different grape. It has pungent varietal aromas reminiscent of a Northern Rhône wine, with smoked bacon, tar and violets. It's juicy and round, with good ripeness, 15% alcohol and fine-grained and polished tannins. The oak is completely integrated here. It now matures in 500-liter barrels because it's the most reductive variety they farm, and it works better in barrel than in foudre. They struggled a lot in 2023 because it didn't rain a drop until May; that provoked a higher yield and vigor in the plants, and they produced a little over 20,000 bottles.

Features

Description

Valtosca red wine is born in the region of Jumilla. This wine is a single varietal Syrah, which gives it a distinctive character and a unique personality. Its name comes from the fresh soils covered by a type of limestone called "tosca", which gives rise to this ripe and concentrated single varietal.
This wine stands out for its combination of black fruit and toasted aromas. It is one of Casa Castillo's best known wines and serves as an excellent example of the potential of Syrah in Murcia.

Winemaking

The grapes come from two plots located in the transition between the slopes of Gravas and El Valle. The grapes are harvested by hand and the fermentation is traditional with indigenous yeasts, using between 25 and 30% of whole clusters in underground vats. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in vats. The wine is aged for 12 months in used 500-litre barrels.

Taste

Valtosca has a cherry colour with a violet rim. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe red and black fruit, floral, mountain herbs and spices. The palate is fruity, with good acidity and a long finish, and powerful but well polished tannins.
