Description
In the heart of the Côte de Beaune, where limestone dominates under a skin of clay and gravel, Vincent Girardin found in Morgeot an inky voice in a historically white territory. This plot, close to the former abbey of Chassagne Montrachet, offers a demanding terroir, where Pinot Noir vines - 45 years old - sink their roots into poor, chalky, stony soils. There are no concessions here: Girardin is committed to precise viticulture, Guyot pruning and meticulous management, convinced that the wine's expression is born long before fermentation.
Winemaking
Vincent Girardin Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Rouge is harvested entirely by hand, with triple sorting: in the vineyard, on the table and - depending on the vintage - by optical sorting. Some of the bunches may be kept whole, depending on the quality of the year. After cold pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks with temperature control and gentle pumping over. Ageing takes place for 16 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels, and the wine is bottled with light filtration, following the lunar calendar.
Taste
Vincent Girardin Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Rouge displays fresh red fruits on the nose - raspberry , wild cherry - and a background of sweet spices: cinnamon, clove, a touch of discreet vanilla. When oxygenated, notes of undergrowth, damp earth and a faint floral echo emerge. The palate is elegant, silky in texture, with a lively acidity that adds precision and freshness. The tannin is fine, well integrated, and the refreshing finish leaves a menthol and mineral sensation. A refined Premier Cru that favours tension and purity over opulence. Perfect with fine charcuterie, roast poultry or soft-rinded cheeses.
