Sorte O Soro 2022

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
There was a slight change in the 2022 Sorte O Soro, as they still fermented it in 500-liter barrels but then it was transferred to an oval 1,500-liter foudre for the élevage, as they feared maybe the smaller barrels could mark the wine. Despite being fresh and balanced, it comes from a much warmer vintage, and the wine does not have the energy and freshness of the wines from 2021. It's a triumph over the conditions of the harvest. 2,050 bottles produced.

Description
Sorte O Soro is a single plot wine, located in the Bibei Valley, Santa Cruz do Bolo. This vineyard, planted in 1978, uses an original Godello clone of low vigour, which has been selected for the reproduction of plant material in new plantations. Located at an altitude of 710 metres, the vineyard enjoys a south-west orientation and receives a constant breeze that balances the ripeness and freshness of the grapes. The granite soil, with fine sands and quartz schist, gives the wine a saline character and a remarkable minerality. It is cultivated with animal traction and following the principles of biodynamic agriculture, including pruning and harvesting according to the lunar calendar. Fermentation takes place in 500-litre barrels and ageing lasts 8 months.
Taste
Sorte O Soro presents great elegance with subtle aromas of mandarin peel and magnolia flowers, accompanied by a pleasant minerality. On the palate, it stands out for its great acidity and balance, combining an ethereal structure with remarkable power. This wine is described as an "iron fist in a velvet glove", with an electric, granite-like minerality. It is a world-class wine, considered by some critics to be the best Spanish white of the modern era. On the palate, it is sharp, savoury and fresh, with a fruity retronasal and a distinct saline sensation on the finish.
