Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Made from Tinto Barocca, the 2021 Old Vine Series Treinspoor is instantly impressive in the glass with a fresh frame of dark red fruits that sways with just-ripe plum and dark cherry skin essences. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is muscular with a gripping tannic edge that reveals devastating beauty and picturesque, spiced plum and dusty florals across the mid-palate. The wine loosens and uncoils as it sits in the mouth before ending with a fresh, fruited, slightly spicy finish that lingers with a tight graphite sensation.

Features

Description

Sadie Family Treinspoor wine is an authentic expression of the terroir located in Malmesbury, Swartland. This wine comes from a vineyard located next to the old railway line, hence the name "Treinspoor". It is made primarily from the Tinta Barocca grape, also known in South Africa as Tinta Das Baroccas. This variety, with its fragile, thin skin, is prone to sunburn, but in this case, the old bush-like vines protect the clusters from the intense Swartland sun. Tinta Barocca combines the texture of Nebbiolo with the aromatic orientation of Syrah, resulting in wines of great character and expression.

Winemaking

The winemaking begins with a spontaneous natural fermentation that includes 50% whole bunches and 50% destemming, and is left to ferment for 25-30 days before being pressed in an old basket press. During fermentation, only light pumping-over takes place, as it is easy to over-extract the abundant tannins of the Tinta Barocca.
After pressing, the wine is transferred to 28-year-old conical wooden vats that do not contribute any wood flavours. After 11 months on the lees, it is racked to another concrete tank for an additional month to allow the gross lees to settle and, two weeks before bottling, 65mg/L of sulphur is added.

Taste

Tinta Barocca is a grape that brings the soil to the bottle, being an excellent communicator of terroir. This variety has had a long-standing relationship with Swartland, and its herbal and spicy aromatics, along with its purple plum-like fruit, translate into a very compact core of the wine. The tannins of Tinta Barocca behave similarly to Nebbiolo, requiring proper ageing. Treinspoor is a perfect example of this variety, showing dark aromas of blueberries, spices, herbs and graphite. Despite the noticeable presence of tannins, they are incredibly soft and rounded. The purity and concentrated fruit make this wine a serious, multi-layered and textured drink. It is a wine that asks for time and patience, promising to reward those who wait for it.
