Description
In the village of Portela, in the heart of Valdeorras, Pedrouzos is born, a wine that pays tribute to a visionary gesture. In 1885, José Ramón Gayoso replanted a small plot devastated by phylloxera, betting on the purity of Godello when no one else was doing so. That "peza", known today as Pedrouzos, gave birth to a single-varietal tradition that would change Galicia's winemaking history. Since 2021, this wine no longer comes exclusively from that mythical plot, but is made from a selection of the best old Godello vines that the family grows in Portela, all on slate soils. A serene but firm tribute to Gayoso's legacy and to the mineral strength of his land.
Winemaking
Pedrouzos is 100% Godello, harvested by hand and carefully selected in the vineyard. The must is extracted after gentle pressing and fermented partly in used French oak barrels and partly in stainless steel, depending on the vintage, to maintain a balance between freshness and structure. Subsequently, the wine spends six months on its lees in barrels and a further year in steel tanks, refining its texture without losing its identity. It is bottled without aggressive stabilisation, preserving both the varietal expression and the terroir.
Taste
Aromatically Pedrouzos is precise and deep: notes of ripe pear, green apple and apricot stone blend with hints of beeswax, raw almond and an intense minerality of wet slate. The palate is taut, sharp on the attack, with vibrant acidity supporting its fat, enveloping body. The ripe white fruit appears between saline and citrus layers, with an herbaceous background (white tea, fennel) that refreshes and lengthens. Long, dry finish, with echoes of hot stone, lemon peel and a slight elegant bitterness. It is a Godello for ageing, but today it offers a pure, honest and profoundly Galician interpretation of the landscape in which it was born.
