Description
Pedro Méndez doesn't seek to follow beaten paths: at his winery in Meaño, in the heart of Val do Salnés, his ambition is to revive the forgotten. Since 2015, he has unearthed old plots -more than 60 years old, trained on granite xabre- planted with native varieties: Albariño, Espadeiro, Mencía and Caiño Tinto. Pedro Méndez Viruxe - "fresh wind" in Galician- is thus born as an act of faith: an Atlantic Mencía, light and revealing, born from old vines facing the sea, on soils of decomposed granite and organic matter.
From the vineyard, the harvest is an intimate ceremony: bunches of grapes are selected one by one and trodden with the feet, as was done in the old days, in a gesture that seeks gentleness, respect and direct connection with the fruit.
Winemaking
Once in the winery, the fermentation of Pedro Méndez Viruxe starts with indigenous yeasts, with no additives, relying on the natural character of the vineyard. The wine rests for nine months in used French oak barrels, just enough to provide structure without masking the vibrant fruit. After devatting, it is transferred to stainless steel tanks for an additional two months, gaining precision and freshness. Before bottling, it is lightly filtered and receives a minimal dose of SO₂ - just enough to preserve without dampening its spirit.
This low-intervention ritual results in an Atlantic wine of pure expression, a bottle that speaks more with its subtleties and movement than with technical ostentations.
Taste
From the first olfactory hint, Pedro Méndez Viruxe is a whisper of Atlantic freshness: lively red fruits -cherries, raspberries- accompanied by a background of blackberries and a delicate balsamic touch, such as menthol or laurel, which adds mystery without stridency. There is no opulence, but lively lightness: the acidity shines, the tannins caress, and everything flows gracefully.
The palate confirms the enigma: taut, sharp, delicate and yet surprisingly silky. The granite is perceived not only in mineral textures, but as a silent presence that sustains the wine. The freshness is continuous, the drink long, the texture deep and elegant.
Pedro Méndez Viruxe does not boast; it hints. It does not shout fruit, but reveals it: ripe, precise, Atlantic.
