Description

At Mythopia, wine is not made to tame the mountain, but to listen to it. Romaine and Hans-Peter Schmidt set up this project in Arbaz, in Switzerland, with a bold idea: to breathe new life into a vineyard depleted by intensive farming. They abandoned synthetic products, planted trees, flowers and herbs amongst the vines, and even sacrificed some vineyard area to promote biodiversity. That decision defines its character. Mythopia Schiller is made from Pinot Noir and Chasselas, a very Swiss and deeply local blend, set against a landscape of steep slopes, limestone soils and an alpine climate characterised by a wide daily temperature range. The result is a Swiss wine that is difficult to categorise: rosé in appearance, almost red in character, yet with an airy and vibrant energy.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for Mythopia Schiller follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, but also of immense patience. Pinot Noir and Chasselas are fermented together as whole bunches, remaining in maceration for six months in stainless steel. The aim is not extraction or artificial manipulation, but a slow release of colour, texture and depth. After gentle pressing, the wine is transferred to barrels, where it ages for three years. This extended ageing is not intended to mask its character, but to allow it to find its own balance. Finally, it is bottled unfiltered and without added sulphites, preserving its lively vigour, its free-spirited character and its somewhat untamed identity.

Flavour

In the glass, Mythopia Schiller does not burst forth with exuberant fruit, nor does it retreat into austerity. First come raspberry, wild strawberry and a fresh, crisp, barely ripe red note. Then the background emerges: fresh earth, dry grass, a stony minerality that anchors it to the landscape. The palate is fascinating. What seemed like a rosé stretches out with the depth of a delicate red and the tension of a briny white. The acidity cuts through it with vigour, sharpening and propelling it forward. There is red fruit, yes, but always dry, fresh, without any cloying sweetness. The tannins are barely perceptible, just enough to give it grip. The finish is dry, vibrant, spicy and long-lasting with mineral notes. A rare, free-spirited and memorable wine made with minimal intervention.
