Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne (Duc de Magenta) is medium to full-bodied, satiny and saline, with more cut and energy than the Maison bottling.

Features

Description

Louis Jadot Duc de Magenta Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne was born from a shared conviction between the historic Maison Louis Jadot and the Duc de Magenta family: to extract the purest expression of Burgundian Chardonnay in a singular plot. "Clos de la Garenne" is a walled vineyard located at the top of the hill of Puligny Montrachet, close to renowned climats such as Les Folatières and Les Referts. The estate, with medium-density limestone soils, enjoys an ideal altitude and exposure offering tension, freshness and minerality. It was a personal commitment of the Magenta family to revitalise this forgotten clos, preserving the oldest vines and applying a precise and uncompromising viticulture.

Winemaking

The Louis Jadot Duc de Magenta Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne is harvested by hand in small crates, respecting the integrity of the fruit as much as possible. The bunches are gently pressed and fermented in oak barrels, with a third of new oak, so as not to hide the expression of the terroir. The wine is aged on fine lees for 15 months, which gives it unctuousness, depth and a perfectly integrated structure. This process reveals a refined style, where the wood is only a frame and never the protagonist.

Taste

On the nose, Louis Jadot Duc de Magenta Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne is elegant and subtle: it opens with notes of ripe lemon, white flower, fresh butter and light smoky hints. As it breathes, hints of white peach, candied citrus peel and a chalky minerality that anchors it to the Puligny terroir emerge. On the palate, it combines tension and breadth: it has a vibrant, yet perfectly integrated acidity that stretches the wine and makes it persistent. The texture is silky, with a saline background and delicate notes of toasted oak, vanilla and hazelnut. The finish is long, fresh and restrained, ideal for noble fish, raw seafood, subtle vegetarian dishes or goat's cheese. A Premier Cru that shows how elegance can be both intense and restrained.
