Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Larmandier-Bernier NV Extra Brut Latitude a Vertus NLR1001-13 (corresponding to a cuvee formerly referred to as “Tradition”) originates with vineyards on the south side of Vertus, whose relative warmth and weight of soil supports a majority of Pinot Noir, which comprises 20% of this cuvee. Alluringly aromatic, this combines saffron, fennel pollen, fresh apple, freshly baked bread, plus tangy buckwheat and ocean breeze, all of which reunite on a buoyant and polished palate, joined by raw almond and with the saline, alkaline and chalky mineral elements gaining prominence en route to a mouthwatering finish. It ought to merit attention for at least 2-3 years.

Description
In the south of Vertus, in the prestigious Côte des Blancs, the Larmandier family has been cultivating Chardonnay for generations with an almost ascetic devotion. The cuvée we know today as Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Extra Brut was born in the 1970s under the name "Tradition", but it was Pierre Larmandier who, true to his quest for precision, renamed the wine to more accurately reflect its character: round, solar and deeply linked to a specific strip of the vineyard. All the grapes come from the same latitude, in pure limestone soils, where the Chardonnay ripens slowly until it reaches a perfect balance between ripeness and tension.
True to a philosophy of minimal intervention and biodynamic cultivation, the Larmandiers make wines that mirror the soil. No make-up, no artifice. Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Extra Brut is made from 100% Chardonnay, with 40% reserve wines from a solera begun in 2004, adding layers of complexity and depth. It is a generous Champagne, but never heavy; with the vertical energy that characterises the house.
Winemaking
The grapes for Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Extra Brut are gently pressed and the must ferments with indigenous yeasts in large Stockinger oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously, respecting the wine's identity as much as possible. It remains on its lees for a full year, without fining or filtering. After blending in July, the second fermentation takes place in the bottle, where Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Extra Brut ages for at least two years on its lees. Disgorgement is done by hand, nine months before release. The dosage is minimal: just 2 g/l, underlining its purity and natural tension.
Taste
On the nose, Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Extra Brut seduces with notes of golden apple, candied lemon, brioche dough and wet stone. The palate is full and creamy, with fine, enveloping bubbles. Its perfectly integrated acidity brings freshness, while the subtle salinity and chalky background prolong the finish. It is a vibrant yet approachable Champagne, with a quiet elegance that makes it an ideal companion for both gastronomy and toasting without reason.
