Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2017 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Terre de Vertus, which derives from two east-facing plots within the same lieu-dit in Les Barillers, located mid-slope, imparts a very mineral, almost crystalline character. A vineyard that rarely produces powerful wines, even in the context of 2017, it has retained its personality, though it’s a little more generous and slightly less focused than the 2016 rendition. Unfurling from the glass with aromas of lemon peel, honeysuckle and oyster shell, it is medium-bodied, racy and saline-tinged and can be approached before the last year’s release. It was disgorged in May 2023.

Description
In the limestone heart of the Côte des Blancs, Pierre and Sophie Larmandier grow Chardonnay with absolute devotion to the terroir. Since 1995, a single plot on the middle slopes of Vertus - Les Barillers - has been vinified separately, without blending, without artifice. This is how Larmandier-Bernier Terre de Vertus Premier Cru Brut Nature is born, a Champagne that needs no presentation or embellishment. 100% Chardonnay, 100% Vertus, 0% dosage. For Larmandier-Bernier, purity is not a slogan, it is a principle. This cuvée is not a blend of years or soils: it is a precise snapshot of a place and a moment, made with minimal intervention and absolute confidence in what the land has to say.
Winemaking
The grapes for Larmandier-Bernier Terre de Vertus Premier Cru Brut Nature, grown biodynamically, are gently pressed and the must is transferred directly to Stockinger's foudres and oak barrels, without excessive fining. There, it ferments spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally, and the wine rests for a year on its fine lees, without filtration or clarification. The wine is bottled at the end of July, and the bottles are aged for more than six years on its lees. Disgorgement is carried out by hand and no sugar is added. The ripeness of the fruit and the expression of the terroir make dosage unnecessary: with Larmandier-Bernier Terre de Vertus, nothing is disguised, everything is revealed.
Taste
The first impression on the nose of Larmandier-Bernier Terre de Vertus Premier Cru Brut Nature is austere and precise: lemon peel, dried white flower, green almond, wet chalk. An almost marine salinity envelops the whole, like a mineral breeze that anticipates its character. On the palate, the wine is dry, straight and sharp. The acidity vibrates with controlled tension, pushing notes of green apple, grapefruit, citrus zest and toast. There is no sweetness or ornamentation: everything is guided by a crisp, lingering minerality. The finish is long, saline, sharp, leaving a trail of freshness and purity that seems chiselled in stone. An uncompromising, brutally honest Champagne for those who seek emotion in verticality and character in nakedness.
