Description

Kühling Gillot has always understood that in Rheinhessen, ‘terroir’ is not merely a fancy concept, but a precise location. With Oppenheim Riesling Trocken (VDP. Erste Lage), the winery looks beyond the direct influence of the Rhine and draws on its historic vineyards in Oppenheim, a natural amphitheatre that retains the day’s heat with very little temperature fluctuation. Here, limestone and fossiliferous limestone reign supreme: light, chalky soils that do not yield easy exuberance, but rather a precise, saline character. The idea behind this wine stems from a bold and almost ‘anti-marketing’ decision: to let the village speak for itself, with a dryRiesling that serves as an ambassador for its origin, without any aromatic embellishment. There is no blending here: 100% Riesling, and the whole story is written by the stone and the wind.

Production

For Kühling Gillot Oppenheim Riesling Trocken, the grapes are harvested fresh and handled with care to preserve their tension. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts, seeking depth rather than immediate fragrance. The wine is then aged on fine lees in large 2,400-litre Doppelstück casks, a format that provides slow micro-oxygenation without a ‘wood flavour’, refining the texture and sustaining the mineral backbone. The result is bottled once the lees have imparted that sense of serene volume, without losing its edge.

Taste

In Kühling Gillot Oppenheim Riesling Trocken, the colour is pale yellow with silvery glints. On the nose, the wine is understated: ripe citrus, lemon and lime zest, and a hint of dampstone/chalk that brings energy and edge. Notes of apple and a smoky-flinty nuance emerge, lending it a more serious and mature character. On the palate it is dry, straightforward and athletic: medium-high acidity that is clean and taut, restrained fruit (somewhere between white peach and a hint of stone-fleshed apricot ) and, beneath that, a chalky salinity that clings to the palate like quarry dust. The finish combines delicate herbs (lemon balm, mint) with a mineral persistence that calls for food: grilled fish, barbecued vegetables, or dishes with a certain amount of fat that the wine cuts through with elegance.
