Description
In Jean Ginglinger's biodynamic vineyards in southern Alsace, every year is a different story written by the weather. Jean made an unusual decision: to unite in a single cuvée the fruits of all his Pinot Noir vineyards - including those that would normally give rise to labels such as Sandstein or Steiner - so as not to lose a drop of the character of the place. Thus was born this Ginglinger Pinot Noir, a pure, honest and uncompromising expression.
The Alsatian soil here is a complex mix of siliceous sands, mica and schist, which bring finesse, minerality and freshness. Jean, true to his principles, does not clarify or filter the wine. He trusts in the indigenous yeasts, in the rhythm of the must and in a respectful ageing process that does not impose, but lets the wine speak.
Winemaking
The grapes for Ginglinger Pinot Noir ferment spontaneously in tank, without additives, and then mature for 12 months in a large capacity old vat. No fining, no filtering. The wine is bottled early, maintaining tension and freshness, as a direct reflection of the vineyard.
Taste
Bright, clear ruby in colour, Ginglinger Pinot Noir opens with aromas of tart red cherry, wild raspberry and a faint floral note. On the palate, it is precise, light in body but firm in character. A lively acidity runs elegantly through it, supported by very soft tannins and a mineral background reminiscent of wet stone and red tea. There is also a slight citrus bitterness - like orange peel or sour cherry - that gives structure and finishes with a silky, fresh texture. There is no sweetness or fruity excesses: this wine breathes air, verticality and naturalness.
A Pinot Noir from Alsace for those in search of purity, energy and that delicate balance between rusticity and grace.
